Soy wax is a vegetable wax derived from soybeans. Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum, coal, or oil shale ant it is the most commonly used wax to make candles, mostly because it is cheaper and more accessible than soy wax. Not only is soy wax better for the environment it also lasts longer! Did you know that you can get 50% more use out of a soy candle?
If you are on your sustainability journey you would probably like to also know that soy wax candles are made from vegetable oils which means that they are non-toxic. This means that your candle will release minimal soot in comparison to paraffin ones. They are also a renewable resource due to soybeans being an environmentally friendly and sustainable.
In addition to all of the above soy wax candles are much easier to clean when spilled because it is biodegradable.
- Trim your wick if it gets longer than 10 to 15 millimetres (this way your candle will burn more evenly without a large smoky flame)
- Instead of blowing out a candle dip the wick in wax (this gets rid of the smoke released after the candle is blown out)
- Ventilate your room after extinguishing a candle.
